Archaeology

The origins of the Museum, known at the time of its founding as the Episcopal Artistic Archaeological Museum, and its subsequent history have been closely bound up with archaeology, understood, that is, as a cultural activity. At first, archaeologists were driven purely by the desire to collect, following aesthetic criteria rather than historical interest. Only later did archaeology come to be recognised as a means of better understanding the past.
