Altarpiece dedicated to Saint Lawrence

Gothic

Anonymous

Second half of the 15th century

Location icon

The Preixana altarpiece is interesting for being one of the few medium-sized altarpieces to have survived in its entirety. It is dedicated to Saint Lawrence, who appears standing in the central panel dressed as a deacon wearing the dalmatic. The side panels narrate the episodes of his martyrdom and death. In the compartments on the right there are the scenes of the presentation of the saint before Decius, his martyrdom and the baptism of Cyriaca and Lucilius. In the compartments on the left there are other scenes of his martyrdom and burial. On the predella we see Saint Paul, Saint Ursula, the Virgin, Saint John the Evangelist, Saint Barbara and Saint Peter. In the central scene there is the figure of Christ, Lord of Sorrows, held by an angel. We do not know the name of the artist who did this altarpiece, although Alcolea and Gudiol believe that it was a painter from the Lleida school in the second International Gothic period, a follower of the art of Jaume Ferrer II.
